How to Identify a Water Softener Control Valve Before Ordering Parts

Correct water softener parts selection starts with the control valve, not the cabinet brand or the appearance of the display. A system assembler can install a Pentair Fleck, Clack, or Pentair Autotrol valve under a different equipment label. The controller can also change while the valve body remains the same.

Record these details before searching

  1. Valve manufacturer and model: look for Fleck, Clack, or Autotrol markings on the valve body, rear label, cover, or service label.
  2. Controller or timer: record the exact controller name and button layout, but do not use the controller alone to identify the valve body.
  3. Flow configuration: determine whether the system is downflow, upflow, or filter-only. Pistons and injector positions can differ.
  4. Plumbing size and distributor opening: WS1 and WS1.25 parts are not interchangeable merely because the controls look similar.
  5. Existing OEM number: copy every character, dash, and suffix from the old part. Do not normalize punctuation.

Use the valve body, not the equipment cabinet

Cabinet labels identify the assembled appliance, but many repair parts belong to the control valve. Compare the physical valve and its service label with the identification drawings in the official manual. The Clack WS1/WS1.25 manual, for example, separates 1-inch WS1 bodies from 1.25-inch versions and lists different main pistons and spacer stacks. The Autotrol manual separately illustrates the 255 valve and Performa 263/268 valve body.

Confirm the service configuration

A model name is not enough for every component. The Clack manual lists different WS1 downflow and upflow pistons, and says the upflow and downflow valve bodies are unique to their regeneration type. The Fleck 5600 manual lists standard, low-water, and filter pistons separately. Injector size also depends on the system configuration and tank size.

Search the exact part number

Once the valve and configuration are known, use the complete OEM number in our exact parts index. Keep dashes and suffixes. A close-looking number may identify a different revision, voltage, flow direction, or assembly.
