Water Softener Keeps Draining: Valve-Specific Causes

A water softener should discharge to the drain during specific regeneration cycles. Water that continues after the valve should have returned to service can indicate a stalled cycle, foreign material, damaged seals, a piston or valve-disc problem, or a drive failure. Identify the valve and confirm the cycle before selecting parts.

Rule out a normal regeneration cycle

Check the controller display or mechanical cycle indicator and compare it with the manufacturer manual. A system actively in backwash, brine/slow rinse, or fast rinse is expected to send water to drain. Do not interrupt the valve or rotate a camshaft by hand unless the manual expressly requires that action.

Fleck 5600

The Fleck 5600 troubleshooting table lists foreign material in the control, an internal control leak, a control valve jammed in brine or backwash, and a stopped or jammed timer motor as causes of continuous drain flow. The table directs service personnel to inspect the piston bore, evaluate seals and the piston assembly, and check the timer. These are different failure paths; continuous drain does not prove that the seal kit alone is defective.

Clack WS1 and WS1.25

The Clack troubleshooting table lists a power outage during regeneration, damaged seal/stack assembly, piston assembly failure, and an improperly tightened drive cap assembly for water running to drain. It separately lists motor-position errors caused by mechanical binding or foreign material. Match the WS1 or WS1.25 body and the downflow/upflow configuration before selecting a piston or stack.

Autotrol 255 and Performa 263/268

The Autotrol troubleshooting section lists debris preventing a valve disc from closing as a cause of water flowing or dripping at the drain after regeneration. Because these valves use cam-operated flapper discs, controller/cam position and disc closure both matter. The manual also provides separate checks for camshaft-position errors.

Do not diagnose from the symptom alone

Note when drain flow begins, whether the motor runs, the displayed cycle or error, and whether the system returns to service. Preserve the exact OEM number from any removed component. A stuck valve can waste substantial water; bypass the equipment if the manufacturer procedure permits and arrange qualified service.

Safety: do not open a pressurized valve. Disconnect power, bypass the unit, shut off water, and relieve pressure before disassembly. Follow local plumbing rules and the manufacturer manual.
