Water Softener Will Not Draw Brine: Valve-Specific Checks

A softener that will not draw brine can have a blocked injector or screen, a drain restriction, low water pressure, a brine-line air leak, or an internal valve problem. The correct checks and pressure requirements depend on the control valve. Identify the valve before replacing parts.

First confirm the symptom

Observe the system only during the documented brine-draw or regenerant-draw cycle. Do not confuse refill with draw. Confirm that the controller reaches the correct cycle and that the drain line is not kinked or restricted. Keep the system assembled and pressurized only for observations specifically required by the manufacturer.

Fleck 5600 checks

The Fleck 5600 troubleshooting table lists a plugged drain-line flow control, plugged injector, plugged injector screen, low line pressure, and an internal control leak as causes of failed brine draw. Its correction table calls for cleaning or replacing the injector and screen, correcting the drain-line flow restriction, and evaluating seals, spacers, or the piston when an internal leak is present. The manual states a minimum 20 psi line pressure for this condition.

Clack WS1/WS1.25 checks

The Clack troubleshooting table lists a plugged injector, a faulty regenerant piston, a regenerant-line connection leak, drain-line restriction or excess back pressure, excessive drain height/length, and low water pressure. It states that incoming pressure must remain at least 25 psi for this troubleshooting condition. The WS1 injector and screen sit under the injector cap; downflow and upflow positions differ.

Autotrol 255 and Performa checks

The Autotrol system troubleshooting table lists low water pressure, a restricted drain line, a plugged or defective injector, and a prematurely closing air check. It instructs service personnel to clean the injector and screen or replace the injector when required. The manual also warns that even a small air leak in the regenerant line can prevent draw.

When to stop

Stop if the valve model, pressure, cycle position, or plumbing route is uncertain; if water cannot be safely isolated; or if electrical parts are wet. Do not replace a piston, seals, injector, or cam based only on a generic symptom.

Safety: follow the applicable manufacturer procedure. Bypass the unit, shut off water, disconnect power, and relieve pressure before disassembly. Contact a qualified water-treatment professional for internal valve service.
